Indian Journal of Surgery 72:2, 135-137 12 Treatment Modalities in Thyroid Dysfunction R. Introduction Thyroid dysfunction is a common condition mainly affecting women, with a male to female ratio of around 1:10. An organ-specific autoimmune response is the underlying cause in the majority and susceptibility to thyroid autoimmunity is believed to be influenced by an interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental factors, in addition to endogenous factors such as age and sex (Vanderpump 1995). These antibodies do not seem to have a direct functional role but are implicated in perpetuating the intrathyroidal inflammation and tissue destruction (Ajjan & Weetman 2008). It is frequently seen in multiple family members indicating a genetic predisposition, commonly seen in organ-specific autoimmune conditions. The second commonest cause is a solitary toxic nodule or multinodular goitre accounting for 15-20% of cases (Orgiazzi & Mornex1990). Toxic multinodular goitres tend to occur insidiously in elderly patients with a longstanding nodular goitre. Toxic adenomas result from benign monoclonal proliferation producing a single autonomously functioning nodule, typically greater than 2. Goitres of any nature are more prevalent in iodine deficient areas and are more common in females (Reinwein et al 1988).

The bedroom carpet is most important, because you breathe the polluted dust for one third of the time! Find a motel with plastic water pipes, ask for a non-smoking room and move in for one month. Remove the linens and bring your own borax-washed replacements or immediately take motel lin- ens out to launder in borax and bleach. Rent a small, non-freon refrigerator for your room, available at office supply stores. Until you have gained ten pounds you cannot be sure that you are on the road to health. Bathroom fixtures are sterilized with ethyl alcohol (the 750 ml or 1 liter size bottle only). The toilet is ster- ilized with regular bleach by someone else while you are out of the room. If all this seems needless and excessive to your family, you must stay at the safe motel. But if your family did the job so you can return home, give them a big hug and thank you! Personal Products Although they are not part of your home, clothing and body products are part of your surroundings, too. All clothing, even whites, have dyes stuck to them that are eagerly absorbed by your body. The liver, in its constant vigilance over toxins, pulls them inward for detoxification in its microsomes. Chlorine bleach, even though it is itself polluted with these dyes, can remove them from your clothing. Your own hair, if dyed, can be detoxified with dental bleach, applied to the dry hair for 5 minutes. Because removing things gives back your body its lost immunity and missing metabolism. Taking things only covers up the problem, like adding more and more fuel to a fur- nace that has no draft and is broken. Vitamins, herbs, medicines, and chemotherapy all belong to the category of things to take. But if your goal is regaining your full life-expectancy (not just 5 years) you must remove harmful things first and take things second. We will next discuss supplements, but in my discussion no- tice the difference between those that are given to remove things and those that represent taking things. You may have noticed that the first thing we do is kill parasites so they can not take advantage of the nutritional supplements that follow. Parasites are dead in hours and it is now safe, and neces- sary, to feed the recovering body tissues. I have not done many experiments where we fed large amounts of supplements before killing parasites and bacteria. But feeding the bad guys may explain why the research literature has conflicting results on the benefits of giving vitamins to cancer patients. No others should be used since purity from pollutants and antiseptic is a life-and-death issue now. Corpora- tions selling supplements cannot vouch for, nor even identify the antiseptics used in their own products. The Syn- crometer detects them in crucial organs of sick people, so they could not be negligible. You could, of course, have your supplements tested by a testing lab (see Sources). But you must find a way to conquer your own resistance: it is essential for survival. Although many of the supplements are available as injectables, bypassing the need to eat them, this is not advised. Intravenous solutions and injectables are often contaminated with bacteria or polluted with solvents, heavy metals and dyes.

Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifce, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnifed and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. In a world older and more complete than ours they move fnished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, Conservacin Ex situ del Lince Ibrico: they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth. Josep Puxeu Rocamora Presidente del Patronato de la Fundacin Biodiversidad fo r E w o r d he Iberian lynx, a symbol of the fauna of the Iberian Peninsula, is today the most endangered cat species in the world. Its future is so uncertain that it may disappear in the next ten years if the worst forecasts prove right. The gravity of the situation has raised widespread alarm on a national and international level and led to increasing efforts to try to avoid the extinction of the species. T In recent years, new measures and projects have been established, and already existing initiatives and plans aimed at preventing the extinction of the Iberian lynx have been reoriented. The Strategy for the conservation of the Iberian Lynx was adopted in Spain in 1999 and has recently been updated. Its mission is to bring together the actions of all the relevant players in the conservation of this species, which is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. The survival of the species intrinsically implies the survival of Mediterranean forest and scrubland, the natural habitat of the lynx, where the species has progressively lost its territory and is being displaced to increasingly restricted and remote areas. The fnal goal of the Strategy for the conservation of the Iberian Lynx is to devote efforts so that the lynx can be a functional part of its ecosystem once again. In a second stage, the national Strategy has established a roadmap with the objective of ensuring that the species qualifes for the category Vulnerable by the year 2020. The medium- and long-term development of new populations of Iberian lynx is an important part of the process established in the Strategy, which is signifcantly based on captive breeding.
